The ROTARY Club of Andover is trying to raise enough money to send shelter boxes to those in need following the Turkey-Syria earthquake.

The World Health Organisation has said the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria has "overwhelmed everyone" - amid warnings the flow of aid must be urgently sped up to save lives.

The number of people killed in both countries continues to grow and now stands at more than 33,000.

A shelter box is just £590 and has lights, a tent, cooking pots, thermal blankets, water carriers, essential tools, water purification treatments and treated mosquito nets.

A spokesperson from the club said: "Over the years we have been able to send over 90 shelter boxes all over the world for various disasters. I know it is not a lot but this time we hope to send four of five to the Earthquake disaster through Shelter Box and Rotary International.

"We are lucky with such a large club that we can send these boxes and money without any costs so all monies donated are used for help.

"Saturday we collected with Anton Rotary and guests a total of £1,500 which with one extra donated Shelter box means we can send four or five boxes. A real help as they sleep 10 people and have cooking pots, plates and cups, cutlery, saws and tools to help rebuild, solar lights, water carriers and filtration units all in the box. At least 10 people can begin life again and at least have an area to call their own and hopefully survive

"They are produced to make sure people and families can survive and at least give them some sort of roof and base to carry on life despite the difficulties."

For those residents who want to give anything they can donate £5, £10, £20, £50 or even £100. All money donated will go towards buying these essential boxes that will house a family, keep them out of the cold and just help them to survive.

Residents are being encouraged to send their donations to The Rotary Club of Andover Benevolent Fund. Barclays, sort code: 20-75-01 account number: 63645142 or email Christopher.lynn36@gmail.com for more information.
